This year, it is more difficult than ever to connect to the communal loss that we commemorate on Tisha B’av. We’re not in shul or camp; we are not experiencing this loss all together. We have been at home, with our families since March, not physically interacting with those who do not live with us. We have spent a lot of time on our own, without other people. We have been inside our own houses, and so we’ve also been inside our own heads, our own experiences. It is much more difficult to see what others have gone through — to connect to suffering outside of our own lives — when we are alone.
When you hear Eicha read aloud, pay attention to what it means, and think about whether you connect to it differently than you have in the past.
